Enhancing Durham Public Schools’ Gymnasium Flooring

This summer, we collaborated with Durham Public Schools to undertake a significant project – refurbishing seven of their school gymnasiums. The challenge was to complete this extensive work during the summer break, commencing in mid-June and concluding mid-August.

Our task within each gymnasium involved multiple phases. We initiated the process by meticulously sanding the gym floors down to their natural wood state. Some schools also required essential repairs, we diligently addressed them. Following the sanding and repairs, we applied two coats of seal before embarking on the creative stage – painting game lines, borders, lettering, and logos. Finally, we applied two protective finish coats to ensure longevity.

From start to finish, each gymnasium renovation took approximately four weeks to complete. To maintain an efficient workflow, we strategically scheduled our crews to transition seamlessly from one school to the next.

At Riverside High School, we faced the challenge of replacing two sections of water damaged flooring along different exterior walls. This process involved removing the damaged flooring and seamlessly weaving in the new sections of wood flooring.

Lucas Middle School presented a different challenge, with over 30 cracked boards scattered across the gymnasium, each of which we carefully replaced.

Notably, when a gymnasium floor undergoes sanding and finishing, it presents an excellent opportunity for rebranding. We collaborated closely with our clients to revamp their gym layouts. For instance, the middle schools lacking logos received a facelift with the addition of borders, center logos, and stained three-point areas. Meanwhile, all the high schools incorporated stained three-point areas to enhance their gymnasium’s aesthetics.

This summer marked a significant transformation for Durham Public Schools’ gymnasiums.
